The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1884. The Central Railway Route
Time is still passing quickly away and no sign has yet been made by the Minister for Public Works of any intention to send a surveyor to examine the railway route from Feilding. Can it be that he hopes we will allow Parliament to meet before we make any further movement towards obtaining our wishes, and the fulfilment of his promise ? We are perfectly aware that the limited supply of capable surveyors, whose services are at the disposal of the Government, is almost exhausted by the more urgent necessities of the Ministerial route via Mokau, and that our chances ofa survey party being sent out from here are proportionatly lessened. As was mentioned in a recent issue, four parties were to be sent out from Taranaki, if they are not already in the field. The orders in this direction were given with a most remarkable promptitude. The reason is obvious enough. The end of the financial year is fast approaching, and if the expenditure on our survey is not made before that time it cannot be made until again authorised by Parliament, while that of Taranaki may be completed, if a line is discovered at all. We must confess to being somewhat disappointed that at neither the County Council, nor the Borough Council meetings this week, any allusion was made to this most important subject. The presumption is that both the County Chairman and the Mayor, are putting a blind confidence in the good faith of the Minister. Past experience has taught us a different lesson. We know that we will get nothing from this or any other Ministry unless by persistent begging and bullying. Should there be even a week's further delay in commencing the survey, we would call upon the settlers on the Kiwitea and Harbor Board Blocks, and all others interested in that district, to make a decided movement. It would be a very easy matter for the County Councillor representing that district, Mr Mcßeth, to convene a meeting at Cheltenham, or even at Feilding, of the land owners and settlers interested, when resolutions could be passed urging immediate dispatch upon the Minister. This, with the action which has already been taken, would go a long way towards attaining the much to be be desired objeot. \X
