Feilding Larrikins
The trouble and annoyance given by the number of young scamps who collect on the occasion of every public entertainment at the Town Hall is growing past endurance. We can only thin* of one means of stamping out this growing evil at once, which is for the local constable to take the matter vigorously in hand. He has the power, and we believe the inclination, but he has, naturally enough, waited uutil proper and formal informations were sworn against the offenders by the sufferer. It has now been proved that individuals will not bestir themselves, because in too many instances the larrikins are their own.or the sons of respected neighbors, and so it is difficult to get persons to institute proceedings, as they fear to raise up a hornet's nest about their own ears. But as the good name of the place is being seriously injured by the prevalence of youthful blackguardism we must expect the proper official to cast aside all feelings of consideration for the parents, and to do his duty. That the parents have in too many instances neglected their duty cannot be disputed, and it only remains for the law to step in and act in their stead. If one or two examples were made, and heavy fines with the alternative of a few weeks' imprisonment inflicted, on some of the young men, such an example would be made that would strike terror into the hearts of the larrikins and their parents, which would have a most salutary effect. We hope that the Committee of the Anniversary Fete will take all necessary precautions to protect persons from annoyance on the day and evening of their celebration. It would be a great pity to have the pleasure and amusement of several hundred persons marred by a score or so of noisy boys.
