Latest news received here states that vigorous preparations are being made by China with a view to the virtual outbreak of war tfith France. The proclamation also announces that China is in entire friendship with the other Powers. Ottawa, January 12. In the course of a speech at Toronto yesterday the Marpuis of Lansdowne, Governor-General ©f Canada, alluded to the proposed federation of the Australasian colonies, and expressed a hope that the project would be as great a success as the federation of the provinces now forming the Dominion of Canada had proved to do. Caibo, January 12. Intelligence is to hand from Khartoum reporting that the military governor has ordered 11,000 civilians to evacuate that town. The isolated position of the garrison is causing some anxiety in consequence of a belief that an attack will be made upon the town by the partisans of I El Mahdi.

Caibo, January 14. The Egyptian Minister for War and the Colonies has started for Soudan to supervise the evacuation of Khartoum, which will commence immediately on his arrival there. Hong Kong, January 13. News is to hand from China that the French missionaries have been maltreated by the populace in several Chinese cities and some of them have been imprisoned by the Chinese authorities.
