COMMERCIAL.
The N.Z.L. & M.A. Company report, under date January 3, 1884, as follows : CHEIBTCHURCH. The weather continues most unsettled, and reports from the country vary considerably, according to the soil and situation of the several districts. Everywhere the harvest must bo from three weeks to a niontii late. Wheat — The demand for milling qualities noticed in our last has been maintnined, and since prime sorts wore cleared off i lie market, buyers have competed for second grades at last month's quotations. Gals. — The demand has not been active, and is confined to low qualities of feed— fur such Is 7d to Is 9d is obtainable. Stocks are not excessive, and may yet be considerably reduced before the bulk of new crop is available. Barley. — No transactions have come under our notice, and until the new crop is gathered we shall have nothing to report. Ryegrass. — Heavy rains during the month have discoloured, and in some instances injured the hay crop, which will doubtless affect the quality of much seel. There is no market at present. Cocksfoot. — Agrand crop is anticipated if more gen al weather sets in, but last year's opening rates cannot be expected. WELLINGTON. I Oats.— Good short feed of good colour command attention.
