COMMERCIAL.
Wellington. January 2. Laery & Campbell report that there was no great improvement in business, and the < hristmas week showed a want of bustle and energy quite unusual for the time of the year. New potatoes are bow hanging very heavily and are hard to quit and a small parcel of old potatoes, useful to bakers or as seed, are moving very slowly. Fruit has come forward moderately well. Melbourne and Hobart sorts selling at fair prices ; Nelson cherries to-i&y realised 3s to 3s 6d per |-case for cooking sorts, 7s 6d to 8s 6d for desert; pears brought 3s 9d and plums 4s 3d per $-case. On Saturday the entries at the horse sale were not so numerous, owing no doubt to the holidays, and throughout the sale the bidding was very poor, not much business being done ; the class of horses were not at all attractive.
