A serious disaster occurred on the railway near Toronto. A workmen's train collided shortly after leaving the city with a goods train, and twenty passengers were killed, thirty others being seriously injured. Lopdoh, January 2. The homeward Australian mails via Suet and Brindisi, which left Melbourne on November 2nd, were delivered to-day. China appears disposed to make further concessions to France. Courbel has returned to Hanoi. In the riots between the Orangemen and the Catholics the troops fatally wounded three of the Oraagemeu. The Times anticipates a great future for the Anglican Church in Australia. January 4 It is stated that the Turcos assaulted Soutay in a most reckless manner, and one company was almost totally destroyed. Tenders were to»day invited for the loan of one million sterling for the colony of New Zealand. The rate of interest is 4 per cent., and the minimum is fixed at £98 10s.
Received January 5. 1.5 a.m. . ; Lonpoh, January 4. Arrived, the steamship lonic, from Lyttelton, November 24. It has transpired that at the Cabinet Council held yesterday the position of affairs in Kgjrpt wafe discussed at length, but it was understood that no definite decision was arrived at as to the line of action which should be taken for completing the pacification or consolidation of that country. Another meeting of the Cabinet will, however, be held to-day, when it is expected that a decision involving the adoption of important measures will be agreed to. Nbw Yobk, January 3. Mr Bedmend, M.P. for NewKoss, is now in San Francisco, and is engaged in furthering the. objects of the Irish National League. Mr -Redmond will remain in America, and has arranged to deliver an address upon Irish affairs at a large number of places.
