Special to " Star." FRANCE AND CHINA. THE RECENT RIOTS. LARGE NUMBERS WOUNDED. reuter's tklkgrams. ] Received December 29, 2.10 p.m. j London, Dec. 28. It is now stated to be probable that the islands of Hainan, Formosa and Chiban, situated off the Chinese coast, and forming a part of the Empire, will be seized by France as a guarantee f .r the payment by China of the French war expenses at Tonquin. Latest intelligence from Newfoundland states that 28 persons were seriously wounded in the riot which occurred between the Orangemen and Catholics. As a renewal of the disturbance is feared, the authorities have asked the Imperial Government to despatch some troops and a gunboat to the scene of the rioting.
