Lecture
On Tuesday evening Mr Patten, of Tending, deliTered his popular illustrated lecture, entitled " Alcohol and its Properties," in the schoolroom at Halcombe. The illustrations consisted of a series of beautiful views shown on thesereen by the aid of the scioptieon lantern, and also ■a number of chemical experiments with the lamp, test tube, Ac. There was a capital attendance, about 150 persons being pwwent The chair was taken by Mr Bowles, the station master, and superintendent of the Halcorabe Band of jSope, undee the auspices of which the lecture was delivered. Tk« audience -was a most orderly one, a»d listened with great attention. ■■ Several temperance melodies were sung by tfee choir, with aecotopanimemt on the harmonmm by >Ciss Crabb. In addition to the views bearing more immediately on the subject, were some connected with history and places of interest. A sudden illumination of the room by--the magnesium light •caused muck amusement and elicited loud applause. Six persons signed the pledge at tfce end of the lecture, and the usual votes of 'thanks closed a very pleasant •evening's entertainment.
