♦ Special to " Star." FRANCE AND TONQUIN. beuteb's telegrams. London. December 11. It is officially announced that Alfred Tennyson, poet-laureate, has been raised to the peerage, with the title of baron. In the French Chambers a resolution of confidence in the present Government to maintain and defend the influence and honor of France in Tcnquin, has been adopted by a majority of 100. M. Ferry refuses to grant armistice in Tonquin until the basis on which parleying is to proceed is first settled. The Victorian torpedo boat Childers proceeds to Portsmouth on Thursday. Calcutta, December 12. The various courts at the International Exhibition are now nearly completed. The Exhibition is a great success. Fully 90,000 persons have already been admit* ted, and tlie nuaiber of visitors is in-, creasing daily. Paris, Dec. 10. In the Chamber of Deputies to day a debate took place upon the Tonquin policy of the Government, at the conclusion of which votes of credit and of confidence in the Government were passed by large majorities. In the course of his speech M. Ferry declared that the Government were firmlj resolved to follow up their present line of policy and push the operations without delay.
