Aa the time for making jams and preserves is drawing near, and as there is every probability of a scarcity of fruit, the following receipt, as used by a large manufacturing firm in one of the Australian colonies, may be acceptable to many of the good housekeepers of Feilding : — Raspberry or strawberry jams-1 lb of fresh turnips. 1 At of dark sugar, 2 ozs of clover seed, £ oz of cochineal, and 4 ozs of raspberry or Strawberry flavoring. Boil the turnips, sugar, and clover seeds till all are well mixed, which will take about three quarters of an hour, then take off the fire and allow to cool somewhat before adding the cochineal a«d flavoring. . Plum jams require about an onnce of old leather cut very fin* and boiled till soft to represent the skins of the plums, and it is also necessary to put a few plum stones in each tin if the iam is for sale. These no doabt will be found knocking about the back yard. Apple Jams require a few apple pips in each tin as a guarantee of its being the O.K. j thing. Marmalade can oalf be made from pumpkin squash with the rind of a few oranges added, also flavoring, &c. The all absorbing topic of conversation in social circles just now is the/ forthcoming Masonic Ball on the 27th Dec, St. John's Day.
