Feilding Horticultural Show
The Annual Spring Show of the above society took place in the Town Hall yesterday. From an early hour exhibits began to pour in from all parts of the town and surrounding districts, and it was very soon evident that interest in the exhibitions of the Manchester Society was as lively as ever, and that notwithstanding the many drawbacks of the season, there, J...,,,. was going to be a very creditable • show, which afterwards proved to be ' the case. Indeed both the number and quality of the exhibits were far beyond generaTTexpectations, and our . :;;. U opinion expressed on Tuesday, that notwithstanding many persons antici- . " pated'only a^poor show, on account of the almost unprecedent backwardness "".; ' of the season and the recent rough v . weather, yet that after all we should. not be surprised to find many persons would be most agreeably disappointed, s was amply verified. Most -persona ; - ;- were, intact, taken rather aback with <■•--• astoiiisiunent that the exhibit* wjere " z so numerous and so good. The potplants certainly did great credit to the- ' care bestowed upon their: cultivation by the growers. There, was a kxge^'.y.. display of cut flowers, which, although . - of course they showed the effects of the recent storms and gales, included , ■" some very pretty, choice, and wellgrown specimens, the roses, some pf ""', them especially, being , very -fiael , ■ . ■ There was a keen competition among frVia -young- ladies for table, fayifl, .and ■ bridal boquets, and- it must have beeo ':■; a relief to the judges when they got through the somewhat difficult anil , ticklish task, which they evidentfyielt ■• it to be, of judging which were tho. most entitled to prizes. The fruits / could not have been expected to fill a- ■''» very large table, but those shown were , . very respectable specimens, w}ule< ,-■. special mention should certainly be . made of the strawberries of llr W. . ].. / Stevens, and the gooseberries of Mr Betemeyer. The vegetable table gay© ita fojl share of agreeable disappointment, almost every item in. this part of the schedule having a corresponding \, , exhibit, which was Mly equal to expectation, and in some cases much ' beyond it. All here was so good \hat \ we forbear to make distinctions, and will leave this to the prize list below. ,'.;.'' The exhibits in produee^ wer* both numerous and of very good quality on the whole, Mr Betemeyer bearing this palm for ham and bacon, both of which specimens were very fine. •_ Jn ■-■*■ addition to this kind of produce therewere 7 of butter, 6 of bread, 2 of cheese, 8 of eggs, 4 of preserves,, and 5 of temperance beverages, not counting the number contained in each exhibit. There were 15 exhibits in poultry, and the specimens shown were on the whole very fine. As was expected* Mr Betemeyor was the largest exhibitor ; and prize taker, being first , in black Spanish, langfthaftß, dark Brahmay and houdans. Mr SherwiH was the favored one for light games, Mr Hblden. for light Brahmas, Mr Blackmore Jbr game bantams, andMrSandilandsfoc *.>> black breasted games. Some' fine '.' turkeys, geese, and ducks wpro offered as prizes by Mr Holden. The strains of the Feilding Town Band added greatly to the liveliness and enjoyment of the evening, and ; the) master, Mr Daw, and the members, are to be congratulated on tiie t creditable -, manner in which they went through the programme of,, their first performance before a Feilding *udience.'
