CORRESPONDENCE.
Borough Accounts TO THE EDITOB OP THE BTAR. Sib. — In your last issue appeared * \eVer from "Ratepayer," complaining that the balance sheet fur the past halfyear had not been advertised, and asserting that " the Act of Parliament sayg it shall be published." This statement. is incorrect. The Municipal Corporations Act of 1876 certainly stipulates that the ■ annual balance shall be so treated, but it makes no provision for publishing the half-yearly one, which is evidently 0n1y...,,.. intended to be for the information of the Council, and as a check uvon the Treasurer. It will also be observed that - should "Ratepayer's" suggestion .be carried out, the Council would be incurring an expenditure not indulged in by . any other local body in the'colony.' If "Ratepayer" is anxious* to examine tJie :'■;'} accounts I would refer him to clause 138 of the Act above quoted, which states that "any bureess may inspect the accounts of the Treasurer, and take copies from any part thereof, at all reasonable times." I shall be glad to offer him every facility for so doing. I should hot haT# : taken cognisance of " Ratepayer's" letter* had it not insinuated that information' ". was being suppressed from the burgesses. — I am, Ac, G. ( \ Hill. Town Clerk. •
