There is a steady increase in the prices quoted for wool m the London market. A man known as " Old Tom " was locked up this morning for being drunk in the public streets. Property tax is due and payable today. Ten per cent will be added to all tax unpaid on Saturday, the 15th instant. We notice that our local athletes are daily training in good earnest for the decisive events of Boxing Day. i During the last decade 13 men hare died in Great Britain, each of whom left a fortune of £1,000,000 or more. The many friends of Mr James Linton will be glad to learn that his medical adrisers report a considerable improvement in his health. The Board of Education in Oswego are discussing the advisability of abolishing whipping in the public schools. AH the boys favor its abolition. It is intended to hold athletic sports at Cheltenham, and 8J as not to clash with those of Feilding it has been determined that they shall take place on the day before Christum s Day. Full particulars will be duly advertised. It is a significant fact that the introduction of the Adulteration Act has caused a rise in the price of bread all over the colony. There is this satisfaction, that people will not renlly hare to pay any more for the weight of bread purchased than before. Warrants hare been issued to-day for the arrest of two men on separate charges of horse stealing. A gentleman in Feilding has had a letter from Father Moreau, in which it is stated that he is rapidly recovering his health, and will probably visit Feildiug in a short time. Upwards of 50 horses were entered for Messrs Halcombo and Sherwill's sale to-day at the Horse Eepository. The attendance was very good, and the prices were quite up to expectation. A full report will appear in our next issue. Mr Justice Williams, the Victorian Judge, travels the Western circuit on a bicycle. His Honour goes at a good speed. The wig (says the Australasian) has to be transported in the ordinary way. The revenue of Fiji is showing elasticity, and there is the prospect of a surplus at the end of the year of £10,857 13s sd. The revenue of the colony is now about double that of four years ago, without any increase of taxation. In the beginning of September last, England paid, almost for the first time, a public tribute to Henry Fielding, the founder of the English novel. Almost on the same date, the founder of norel writing in Russia, or, at least, [Russia's first great novelist, Ivan Tourgenieff, died in Paris. The Government has granted the application of the Kinitea Road Board for the sum of £3473, under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. Mr Kdward Isaacs, of Auckland (says the Auckland Herald) received a letter by the San Francisco mail from bis daughter, Lady Samuels, informing him that she had used New Zealand mackerel and flounders for the table, which had been sent home from the colony in a frozen state, and that the fish were in excellent condition. Mr A. G. Taylor, a member of the New South Wales Legislature, is distinguished as a questioner. The other day he gave notice of about 100 questions.
