All moans of retreat from the town by land hare been closed; and the river ii also menaced. Steps are being taken to fortify Assouan, a town near the first cataract of the Nile. Baker Pasha (Colonel Valentine Baker) starts for the Souakim in tem days. The Turkish officers of Egyptian gendarmes refuse to serve m the Soudanand they, and the troops under theu command, have refused to proceed there. A rising is expected in Upper Egypt.
