Salvation Army

Canon Chalmers, of Geelong, has been preaching against the methods of the Salvation Array. He was especially severe in his discourse on the way in which the Army deals with young-children. He said : " Children are easily excited ; many of them are ■pleased to thrust themselves into notice and make themselves objects of interest, and it seems to me that nothing can be more adapted to destroy the virtues of the childish character—l mean reverence, humility, teachableness, obedience^—than the methods of the Army. I know nothing more likely to rise up in our mdist a host of torward, pretentious through perhaps unconsciously, little hypocrites, ignorant of the very first principles of true religion. By the novelty, the excitement, the chorussinging, the banner-waving, of Salvationist afltherings, children are especi ally liable to be attracted, and I wou'd urge on the parents of this congregation not to allow their children to attend the Army's meetings, even to gratify their curiosity, or suffer them in any way to come under its influence. Of this they may rest assured —no pood can come of it in the long run."
