A man named Peter McMillan was locked up for drunkenness yesterday by Constable Price. Mrs Francis Cook was Also arrested for larceny of £23 14s from a man named James Buchtinan. The money was the joint property of Buchanan and another man named E. S. Beid, of Makino road. The prisoner Cook was brought before H. L. Sherwill, Esq., J.P., at 2 p.m., and remanded, at the request of the police, until Monday next at 10 a.m. Bail was accepted, herself in £25 and two sureties of £25 each. Messrs F. Thomson and Freeman were the bondsmen. Mr Peter McMillan, and old soldier, appeared before F. Y. Lethbridge, Esq, J.P., this morning, on a charge of being drank in a public place. Peter pleaded that owing the heavy thunder showers which fell yesterday, he took a little too much, to keep out the cold, and not being exact in his calculations he was somewhat upset. As their were no previous conviction against kirn, and Constable Price informed the court that Peter walked peacefully to the cells, a moderate fine -of 5s with the alternative of 224 hours imprisonment was inflicted.
