Tn an article on *'' The Society Aspect ofthe Uuited State-," Archibald Forbes states tbat " Mr Vand^rbilt's near bouse co-t £8,000,000 sterling to build, decorate, and furnish, the uictures not included.'' It is understood that .Mr Vauderbilt has spent two or three millions my re on pictures and statuary. Of JNew York j society Mr Forbes says that '* it costs I consumedlv," and states that whereas I a bachelor can live in London, and go into the best society, on an income of £300 ayear.it requires over £1000 a year to do the same in New York. Social etiquette makes it necessary for him to give " posies" at 25 dollars apiece to ladies who ask him out, or to whom he wishes to show any atteution; and a -rieud of Mr Forbes ' who did not force the running, showed him bis florist's bill for the last season, it footed up over 10,000 dollars. At | the end ofthe season a visitor to Xevr j York is expected to give a " theatie ! party" which costs him about £-300.
