Passing the abattoirs Linda wrestled tli« lead from Archie, and going at & rattling pace, soon put two lengths between them. The latter was closely followed by Martini- Henri, Aide-dc-Oamp, First Demon, Commotion, First Water, Despot, Stockwell, and Calma ; JSicholas heading the ruck. Liada kept Ler position till passing by the sheds. Archie .still second, and comingnp strong. Commotion was rnnning in a good position in the centre of the course, Martini« Henri being in close attendance upon him with Nicholas, Sfockwell, and "First "Water followiag, the Utter eridently creeping up. There was immense excite meat at this stage of the race, and when at the half-mile post Archie rushed to tfce front, thera was a great shout of *' Archie wins" from the crowd. Lind % then held second place, and Aide-dc Camp third, followed by talma, Commotion, and Martini-Henri, First Water and First Demon all well up and going strong. Archie's pride of place, howerer, wai a short-lived one, for, on approaching the home turn, Commotion wrestled it from him and led into the itriight with Aide-do-Caiap and Claptrap following him side by side, Martini Henri. Firet Demon, First Water, and Despot next, and Surdius coming up. Stockwell now made an effort, but the pace was evidently too'! strong f«>r Mm. At the distance, Commotion led by talf a length, with Aide-de-Camp and Claptrap next, but, like a shot 'from a gun, Martini-Henri came out from the crowd, and passed them without an y apparent effort on his part, and amidst deafening cheers ls.nd?d the -earnest «E winners. First Water en me ▼cry fast up the straight, and beat Commotion for second place by a length, after a splendid race between them. Sardius, Firat Demon, Magnet, Aide-de-Camp, [Recovery, Ajrchie, aud Nicholas followed in the order named. The last three to r«u in were Kohinoor, Kingsdale, and Bisbis. Some of the others finding they had no chan c, eased up the straight, the time, 3min SO^ec, being the fastests on record. The ring hare been hard hit by Martini-Henri winning, as he had been backed for thousands both in doubles and straight oat. Tie public are greatly pleased at his win. Pollio or Stockwell would hare better suited the holde s of heary doubles. Nothing is as yet known as to the winners of sweeps. First Water is an aged hors» and a well-known public performer, but during the past year, although he has run on many occasions. has not won anything. In 1881 he won tk« Australasian Cup, carrying 7«t 6lb, in 4mm l|secs. Commotion, syrs, during the past year is credited with the following wins :— Veteran Stakes Handicap, 1$ miles ; V.R C. Spring meeting, Nor. last, carrying Bst 6lb ; at same meeting won Canterbury Plate, 2* miles, carrying 9st; at V:E.C. Champion Meeting in January, won Champion Stakes of 1000 bots, three miles, carrying 9st, and also won Port Phillip Stakes, 2\ miles, at the V.E.C. Autumn Meeting in March, with 9st. In 1877 the Hon. Mr White, Martini Henri's owner, also won tke double event wita Chester.
