County Tenders.
Ouh contemporary the Manawatu Daily i Times has fallen into an error in regard t to the tenders for certain Oroua County Iworks, tiz,,for repairing three Bridges!; on the Buanythorpe-Feilding road. In <
its Saturdays issue the Times says : — At the last meeting of the Oroua County Council tenders were opened for road formation on the Bunny thorpe-Pulmerston road, and it was found that that of Mr Hknhy Dickel, at £130 was the lowest. Tenders for other works were also opened, and subsequently a resolution w*s carried to the effect that the lowest tender in each case be accepted. Mr Dickel reasonably inferred that his was the accepted one, but, to his intense surprhe, he has since received jl communication from Mr Brny, the Engineer, stating that, his "tender has been declined, a more eligible tender having been accepted." Our reporter informs us that if any other tender was accepted, it was certainly not accepted by the Council at last ! meeting, and the fact that three newspapers represented at the Council meeting | bare each given Mr Djckdl's tender ns the accepted one, goes to show that there is a screw loose somewhere. Under the circumstances, and considering that Mr Dickel has been put to considerable expense iv the matter, he is certainly entitled to a reasonable explanation, which we trust will be forthcoming." We have made enquires, and find that tbe tenders for the work as above mentioned were as follows : — J. A. Johmstox, £135; Henry Dickel, £'130; John PobtHous>:, '.£BB 12h, and J. PottTHOtrsK, fceins: the lowest, his fonder was accepted. [Since the above was in type the Times has published the following : — " Wit!> reference to a paragraph published in this journal on Saturday, re a tender of Mr Dickel's, we have to state thp.ton making further enquiries we find that Mr Dickel's was not the lowest tender, Hint of Mr Poethotjse being considerably lower, and therefore accepted. We make this explanation at the earliest possible moment, in order to correct the wrong impression our previous paragraph was likely to make."]
