The Poultry Show.

♦ The Committee of the Horticultural Society are determined that their exhibitions ahall be progressive. At a meeting held on Saturday night it was decided to receive exhibits of poultry for the spring show. This decision happens at a most fortunate time, as the praisworthy efforts of Mr Retemeyer, of Westoe, in the direction of improving the breeds by the importation of the best classes of fowls, are beginning to bear good fruit, and sevoral other gentlemen are now warmly interesting themselves in a similar manner, altbough it will require a long exercise of patient application for them to produce the same splendid specimens that Mr ILetemeyer now possesses. In order to keep up the brved this gentleman has secured a Houdan cock and hen whicli took first pnn at the Sydenham and Christchurch poultry show this season. These birds would have been exhibited at Wanganui and were only prevented by the detention of tho steamer, by which they were eonvejed, in Wellington, they did not arrive until a day too late. Mr Retemeyer was the breeder of the cock bird which took first prize at Wanganui for Mr Prummond. The rooster shown by Mr betemeyer had to be passed over by the judges as the bird had some colored feathers, which is an unpardonable offence in well bred poultry. This fault will not appear in any future exhibits as Mr Retemeyer'c steady increasing stock will enable him to select from a greater number. This gentleman has expressed an-intention of sending some birds to our Feuding show, and we are glad^to say that his example will be eagerly followed by some of our local bird fanciers. The prices are unexeeptionably liberal and ought to be a great encouragement to exhibitors.
