News has been received* from Zululand that Usibepu, with a large body of adherents, made an attack upon a tribe | friendly to Cetewayo, and inflicted great slaughter upon them, fully one-half of them being massacred. - London, October J6. Several shocks of earthquake have been experienced at San Francisco within the last few days. • . ':.■■•■■ A serious riot occurred last evening at Gravesend, between a number of roughs and attachment of the Salvation Army parading the streets. The fighting lasted some time, and the disturbance was only quelled, by a body of polide arriving on the scene. . ; The shipment of frozen mutton by the steamship British King, arrived in good condition. The first portion was placed in the market to-day,: and/realized 6|d perlb. Telegrams from Pretermaritzburg announce that Cetewayo yielded to the representations of Mr Osbome, and agreed to surrender himself to:the British authorities. The "King crossed the border into Natal to-day with an escort of British troops. ■-..,.:. The shipment of frozen meat the steamship Cataloma, from New Zealand, has been found to be in good condition. A portion placed in the market to-day realized sixpence per pound. The London meat market is at present glutted, and lower prices for all descriptions are ruling. ■ • ' :
Received October 18. 1.25 a.m. Xjoksok, October 17.., The great congress of liberals met today at Leeds. Delegates from all parts of the kingdom were present, besides a; large number cf members of Parliament.: The chief topic to be brought before the congress is the extension of the franchise. At the inaugural session to-day the leaders of the party delivered addresses bearing chiefly upon that subject. , , : ,r-^LiBB6K/Ocf6be*l6. A Republican outbreak of some magnitude has occurred among the peasantry in the western portion of this colony {?). A large number of rebels are armed, and a body of troops dispatched against them were repulsed. Beveral persons were wounded, but no deaths reported.
