The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1883. The Feilding Sports and Races.

A meeting has been called tor rext Saturday evening- at the Public Hall to consider the programme for the Sports to be held on the Oval next Boxing Day. It will be within the memory of most of our readers that last year an idea was entertained by a lew tbat the day on which the fete bad been held since the foundation of the settlement should be altered in order to give place to tbe Uaces held at Palmerston on the same day. l Instrong feeling evinced by the Feilding people against any alteration caused the proposal to be rejected, and was really at the same time the means of awak ning such enthusiasm that last year's Sports may be safely said to bft the most success'ul we have yet had, both in regard to tbe events and tbe financial part. We have every hope that the same interest will be taken in the c ming sports, and the same openhandedness displayed on the part of the Feilding public in offering a liberal programme with prizes that will be sufficient to to tempt competitors from every par; of the colony. Iv this respect tbe name of Feilding- stands high with every athlete that has ever competed on the ground, and we n.ust be careful to preserve so honorable a reputation. — In our last issue we published some remarks made by Spectator in the Wauganui Herald wih reference to our Race Meeting on Easte? Monday, wbich is also the day hitherto selected by the liawera Jockey Club. As Feilding has a decioed priority of claim over this day it is to be hoped that the energetic secretary of the Feilding Jockey Club will write to the secrettay of the Hawera (Tub within a reasonable time, and endeavor to make an arrangement that will prevent any future clashing, and will als • allow owners of horses to compere a f both places, if the y are so disposed.
