County Matters.
The Chahman of tho Oroaa County, when in Wellington last week, succeeded in getting the matter of the grants for mam roads in the County arranged. There was some slight complication, owing to the division o£ the Manawatu
County in the interval between the allocation of the grant and the handing in of the debentures. At last, however, after ' some trouble, debentures have been ] handed in, representing a payment of £167 per annum for the Oroua County ( for ten years, for which we receive JttJdiH j for road construction within the Oro ia County. Uuder lh(- amended Roads and Bridges Construction Act, this money Lan be drawn on imprest without waiting ] for the completion of the works, an ar- ' rangement which will be a great convenience to the local bodies in their transactions with contractors. The much-mixed question of Mackay's line, which has been agitating the minds of Kiwi tea ratepayers for some months back has at ! last been settled. The Minister for ' Public Works has reversed his previous ' inequitable decision, and appointed the line up the Kiwitea Valley, always '. known as Mackay's line, to be the main i road proclaimed under the Act. Tlie i grant will therefore be spent on this road, < for which we may remark the plans and estimates were prepared on which the application was made, and on which the ] vote was taken for the special rate. :
