" Civis" writes :— " A North. Island t clergyman was reading in thejbaason* the I other Sunday the history of Hezekiah's [ sickness and recovery. The end of the . lesson and that of the chapter did not co--1 incide, and by mistake the reader went 1 past the proper stopping place. PerceivF ing his error he pulled up suddenly, with the following curious effect : 'And Heze- [ kiah said— Here endeth the first lesson !' ' | This is not so bad, however, as the mis--5 adventure which lately befel an eloquent J young clergyman at Austin, U.S. Being i a man of catholiu sympathies and literary i tastes, he is accustomed to quote from secular writers as often as from the Bible, 1 and often adorns his sermons with refer--1 ences to the novel* of Charles Dickens. ' On a recent occasion he surprised his congregation by winding up a gorgeous ' peroration with. 'It is thus, you s?e, my 5 brethren, as the Scriptures say, 'Barkis ■ is willing, but the flesh is weak.' "
