Fires at Makino.

A night or two since a whare at Messrs Roots and Co's saw mill was burned to to the ground. It was occupied by one of the mill hands named Gascoyne. About 8 o'clock in the eyening he left 4 to visit one of the cottages by the roadside, and had only been absent two or three minutes, when one of Mr' Clark's children called his attention to the fact that the whare was in flames. It was found impossible to put the fire out, and in a few minutes the building and its contents, including a good saddle and bridle, tools &c, and. about £20 worth of clothing, bedding and other articles were totally destroyed. The cause of the fire is unknown, but is supposed tohaveoriginated from the wooden chimney ' getting igniied. Some time during, Saturday night another whare was .destroyed by ,fire at 'M_lc6lms's old mili. Joseph 'Pickering who occupied it, had been arrested in the

afternoon on a charge of lunacy, and is known to have left a fire burning in the ■whare, but whether this caused its destruction or not is uncertain.
