The Marquis Tseng, Ch'nese Ambassador at Paris, has been requested by the French Government to explain the entry of Chinese troops into Tonquiu. In the event of the answer proving unsatisfactory, they will be expelled. China will ask England to mediate in the matter. The Chinese press show a warlike attitude, and urge that the operations and advances of the French must be checked. Chinese seamen serving on board French vessels are deserting in large numbers. The Pall Mall Gazette says that if France seizes the New Hebrides, Mr Gladstone will find it difficult to resist the pressure of the Australasian colonies for a wider annexation than any yet contemplated. Severe storms have been experienced at Newfoundland, and it is feared that a large number of lives and a considerable amount of property has been lost, as 30 vessels are reported as missing.
