A ball took place in the Town Hall on Wednesday last, when about 20 couples tripped the light fantastic toe to the strains of HerrNorberg's sprightly music till the "wee sma' hours ayont the twal." The floor was splendid and the refreshments excellent, a very enjoyable evening being spent.
A handsome mansion has just been erected in Hi^h street, next to Br Frood' 8, to the order of Mr Eobert Smith, of the firm of Begg and Co., a recent arrival from Europe. The building has a yery imposing appearance and assists much to improve the entrance to the town Internally it is being fitted up regardless of expense and will compare faTorably with, any residence in the County when completed
General satisfaction is felt at the result of the recent Town Boaid Elections, and the old members who were returned hare reason to feel proud of the confidence the people repose in them. Our towa is second to none in the Colony as regards the condition of its roads and footpaths, in fact, no town could present a cleaner or neater appearance, and the lion's share of the credit for this pleasant state of affairs is due to the Chairman of the late Board, Mr Eemineton.
It is pleasant, in these dull times, to be able to record any small signs of commercial progress. Our townsman, Mr P. J. Mansell, has found his business has so increased, that an enlargement of his shop became absolutely necessary. By removing a partition he has been able to double the accommodation he formerly had. A large amount of shelves has bean fitted up and also a second counter. His shop is now stocked with a most varied stock of everything, from the proverbial "needle to an anchor." He has just received a magnificent clock which stands Bft. high.
Archdeacon Thorpe met the combined vestries of Sandon, Bulls, and Greatford on Tuesday last, and made final arrangements for incorporating these townships with Foxton for the present, with th» view of appointing a minister, Sandon to be the place of residence. It is generally felt that the district is too large for any clergyman to be able to give satisfaction to any of the cures.
