Feilding Borough Council.
• The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber oa Thursday evening. Present— The Mayor and Crs Worsfold, Rutherford, Lewerd, Fuwles, Higgin and Thompson. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting and the special meeting for striking a loan rate were read and confirmed. The report of the Finance Committee was read. #IKAXCE COJIMITTEE EEPOET. The Finance Committee report they have sat-ie alterations in the debenture form, and that a proof copy from the pi inter hns been received and approved of. Your Committee have also arranged for the advertising of the dt-bentuveg ia the Feilding Stab, Wellington Evening Post, and Raogitikci Advocate, and for the printing of a number of circulars giving fuller information than could be embodied in an advertisement. ' hese circular* will be forwarded to the various branches of the Bank of Australasia throughout the Province, where they will lie for public inspection. Tenders for • the purchase of the debentures will be in by Monday, 24th September. Vouchers for the following accounts have been passed by th« eommitfee, and are recommended for payment:— E. D. Beaufort, librarian, &c, £2 3« 2d ; R. Burret, Statutes for 1882, £1 15s ; Kirton and Curds, printing and advertising, £4 Is ; J. Belfit, carting, 19s ; G. C. Hill, engineering, £1 13s 6d ; C Green, wages, £9 2s; R. Lankshear, ditto, 14s; Mayor, travelling expenses, 19s; J. Morris, lamplighting, £3 14s 6d ; J. B. Roots, culverts and filling, £5 ss ; J. Aitken, contract work, £11. Total— £6o 17s. An account of £40 in reßpect of work done on the Cemetery road by the Manchester Road Board has ben received and held over for consideration, the committee being of opinion th&t the road should be pttt in a proper state of repair before the money is handed over to the Board. H. L. Sheewili, Chairman. The report of the Public Works Committee was then reed. PUBLIC WOBKB COMMITTEE BEPOET. The Committee beg to report that in compliance with instructions from the Council, they have, acting in conjunction with the Engineer, made an inspection of the various streets to ba constructed out of the loin, with the view of enabling them to decide on those requiring more immediate attention, and beg to recommend that the works enumerated in the following schedule be amongst the first carried out by the Council : — Schedule— iailway line, North street to Port street, •42 chains; v orth Street, Kimbolton road to Kailway line, »l chains ; Churcher st., Jf orth street to Port street, 42 chains ; Campbell street, East street to Oroua River, 28 chains; Derby street, Easi street to Kimbolton road, 25 chains ; Beattie street, Grey street to Camden st., 30 chains; Warwick street, Fergusson street to Kimbolton road, 6 chains; Fergusson street fo Warwick st., 10 chains; .hailway line, Bnsse-1 street to Gladstone street, 9 ehnins; West street, King street towards Manchester street, 24 chains ; Derby street, bridge over Makmo; Marlborough street, bridge orer M«kino. Feank y. LETHBttn>aE, Chairman. A letter from Mr Hill, applying for aome consideration ai rent for the library room was read. It was resolved, on tha motion of Cr Worsfold, seconded by Cr Fowles, That the report of the Finance Committee as read be adopted. Cr Rutherford proposed, and Cr Lewers seconded, That Mr Hill's letter be referred to the Finxace '■ omittee. — Carried. The Mayor proposed, and Cr Rutherford seconded, That the report of the Public Works Committee be adopted. The Mayor said that all the works proposed could perhaps not be done out of the first instalment of the loan, as many other scheduled works would, no doubt, be found necessary to be done. Still the Council would not be bound to do all the works proposed in the report. Cr Lewers suggested that the word "received" would be better tlian the word " adopted." Crs Fowles and Thompson agreed with him, and the resolution being altered accordingly was carried. Cr Higgin presented a petition from burgesses residing in Campbell and East streets re the state of the roads, and the petition was ordered to lie upon the table for discussion at a future meeting. A conversation was held on the state of the hbrary, and the best means to be adopted in order to make the institution more efficient, also the desirableness of a a reading room, and obtaining a further supply of books, &.C. Cr Lewers proposed, and Cr Thompson seconded, That the Finance Committee make arrangement! for adding more books to the library, and to report on auch further additions as they may deem necessary.— Carried. The following applications for the office of Deputy Dog Tax Collector, and Borough. Ranger were then opened and read : — W- Araott, C. Wallace, 8. J. Fowles, W. Hammond, E. Worsfold, W. Golding' The applications of Arnott, Hammond, and Golding were by unanimous consent thrown oat, and a ballot was then taken on the three remaining candidates, with the following result :— Fowles 3, Wors. t aid 2, Wallace 2. Cr Higgin proposed, and Cr Rutherford seconded, That S. J.. Fowles .be appointed Rang«r attd Deputy Dog Tax Collector. Cr Lewers drew the Council's attention **V£o the recent legislation in Parliament re the matter of cemetries, and urged that some steps should be taken by the Council with a view of the fullest advantage •of it being obtained by the Council. Some doubt was expressed as to whether this could be done by the Council officially, as the cemetery was not within the limits of the Borough, and it was understood that enquiries whuld be made by the Mayor in order to see if anything could be done. Or Thompson proposed, and Cr Fowles seconded. That the '"ouncil -meet again on Thursday. 23rd inst., at the same time and place.— Carried. , I ■ The Council then adjourned.
