INDIGNATION MEETING

(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Palmerston North, This Day. A large and influential indignation meeting was held last night, Mr Jenssen, Mayor, in the chair, the following resolutions were passed unanimously : — Proposed, by Mr James Linton, seconded by Mr J. B. Hamilton, " That this constituency deeply regrets that after so many endeavors to obtain its legitimate portion of the present vote for Railways in the North Island on the year's estimates, no provision is made for the construction of the line connecting the Palmerston district with Woodville, whereas last year it was understood the distribution of the vote for railway works on the Masterton line to its junction with the West Coast Line was arranged purposely by Government with a view to commence operations at this end within reasonable time." Proposed by Mr McNeil, seconded by Mr Fergusson, " That this meeting respectfully requests that a sum sufficient to commence the construction of the most important link of railway in the North Island, namely, to connect Woodville with Manawatu, be placed on the supplementary estimates of this session of Parliament." Mr Macarthur supported the resolution. Proposed by Mr Snelson, seconded by Mr Venn, " That in the opinion of this meeting it is quite obvious that the Hon W. Johnston has, during the present session, studiously ignored the express wishes of his constituents, which were set forth in certain resolutions agreed upon at the annual meeting of electors held in this hall, and which a deputation then appointed was authorised to convey to him ; and this meeting regrets that through Mr Johnston's inaction, interests of a very urgent importance are passed over, which may tend to sever the confidence go unanimously accorded him at at the last general election." It was resolved to invite Messrs Wilson, Stevens, aud Seddon, M.H.R.'s, to urge on the Government the importance of beginning the Gorge line at once.
