The world may profess todespise money, but a brute, who has it, receives more honour than a *or.d man without it. Wealth is thus "the missing link" that joins respect to the disrespect-able. A statistician has recently computed that the chances of being murdered in Rome and England are as 237 to 1. In ii'ome there is a homicide to every 750 inhabitants ; in England, one to every 178.000. We call attention to the notice elsewhere of Rainer's celebrated panorama of the American War, one of the best ever exhibited in the colony. Tt will show in Feilding' on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. The estimated average yield of the cereal crop for the United Kingdom, based upon returns so far obtained from the harvest, is twenty bushels per aere. The return of wheat shows a large decrease upon that of last year. The dispensation for the Hope of Feilding Tent of the Independent Order of Re>chabites, has been forwarded from head quarters. It is a very handsome and artistic affair, and has been neatly framed by Mr Eade, in whose shop it is now in view. " Civis " writes, recommending that the school bell be utilized as a fire, bell to give warning of any conflagration that might unfortunately happen at any moment. We think the suggestion a good one, and worthy of consideration of the Borough Council anl the School Committee. On Saturday evening last the Vol. Brass Band, consisting of 16 performers, marched into town. The}' proceeded to the balcony of lhe Denbigh Hotel, where they " discoursed sweet music" for an hour of two. They played a selection of marches and dance music with considerable spirit, and showed that under the tutilage of Mr Cunven they will form a really exceileut band' in a very few months. A shocking accident occurred at Woodville on Wednesday, by which a little boy nnraerl Hutchins, five years of age, son of Mr S. Hutchins, a well-known Woodville settlor, was crushed to death. From the particulars to hand, it appears that the unfortunate child went out to pick fungus. .N ot returning quickly, he was missed, and a search was instituted, with the melancholy result of finding the little fellow lying crushed beneath a tree which had fallen upon him. IMo explanation of the tree falling is to hand yet. The Wangnnui Herald says : — The general complaints of the, forwards who upheld the honor of Wanganui on Saturday, is the state of their bodies after the happy result. No doubt it is joy unlimited to be chargiug about at one another, but when a fellow weighing something over 12st comes full pelt upon one, the sensation must be anything but pleasant. One of the most conspicuous Wanganui forwards says the Manawatu men were like " young bullocks " to hold, and his body bears out the truth of tho assertion, for one side is a huga bruise. At last a man has been found who would not marry for money, and the fact is worth the record. A certain young lady wrote to a popular joung clergyman of Toronto; tbat he had converted her soul to grace, that she was ready to lay her fortune at his feist, that she loved him deeply, passionately^, and that her hand was his if he would ti*ke it. To which the clergyman replied : "My dear Miss , give your soul to God,your fortune to the poor, and keep your hand till some man asks for it." Our obituary column contains an announcement of the death of Mrs Knox, a well-known and respected resident of this city, and the widow of the late Dr Knox. Dr and Mrs Knox arrived in Wellington in 1840, and resided here up to the time of their death. The doctor was in practice till August, 1873, when his death took place, he being then over 80 years of age. Mrs Kndx died at the age of 80 years. She leaves surviving her two sons and daughters, also about 50 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. The funeral took place cu Satur« day last from the resideuce of the Rev. C. D- de Castro.T-Post. In another column appears the programme of the Presbyterian Church Concert, to be held on Friday evening next, in the Town Hall. The rehearsals have been frequent, and m each case most successful. The gle«s will be a treat in themselves. The 1 Makino Band will assist by playing a, musical selection during the interlude between the first »and second parts of the programme. Very few of the reserved seats are yet undisposed of. The concert will.be both a musical and financial success, and great credit will be due to the Secretary, Mr Stevens, and the conductor, Mr Geo. Bartholomew, who hay£both been untir- . ■'*• ing in their exertions. One morning Edwin and Angelina started out 1 for a long ramble. Being gone all day, they returned in the evening completely worn out and fatigued. The young lady and gentleinhn were met by a party of their' friends soon -after their return, and were asted as to what kind of a time-thfiy had. $ov£ the young lady has a v.ery unuandy way of proving any assertion she may make by appealing to any friend she happens to havfl with her at the time.
