Manawatu County Council.

The first meeting of the above body was held at the Council i ham ber, Foxton, on Monday. Present— Ail the Councillors. After a rather breezy discussion, Cr Thynne was elected Chairman, and took his* seat, thanking the Council for the honor. An interchange of rather animated remarks between some of the Councillors ensued as to the adjustment of accounts and it was ultimately Proposed by Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr McLennan — That a special meeting of the Council be held on Wednesday, the 16th inst, at noon, to adjust the accounts between the two Counties. Awahuhi Bridge. A long discussion took place over a question raised by Cr Sancon, in considering a letter from the Oroua County asking the Manawatu body to decide which County should retain the management of the Awahuri Bridge -Cr Sanson thought the County should make application for the bridge to be vested in the Manawatu body, and he moved a resolution, to that effect, stating his views at length.— Cr Rockslrow strongly opposed this, on the ground that the site of the bridge, being within the Oroua County, naturally the Northern County should manage it. — An amendment moved by Mr M'Kenzie, leaving the matter in the hands of the two Committees from each Council was carried. It was resolved to instruct the Returning Officers for the Oroua and Kawakawa Ridings in future to appoint a polling place at Awahuri. Mr M'Culloch was re-appointed Clerk and Treasurer at a salary of £200 a year. The Chairman's salary was fixed at £100, to include travelling expenses.
