Sir William Fox arrived in Feilding by the noon traiu to-day. The Rev. 11. M. Murray will lecture on " Agnosticism" on Sunday night. The Feilding B'T'iigh Council meets this evening, at 8 o'clock. Gorton is so far recovered that he wili be able to proceed to the South Island for a change of air. A practice match will bo played by thf footballers in Palmerston on Saturday next at 3 p.m. Halcombe and Feilding men arc requested to roll up. Mr Lttigh, who is manager for Messrs Stevens and Gorton in Palmerston, is now conducting tne auctioneers business ol the firm. We are requested to intimate that Stevens and Gorton's stock saleanuounced to be held at Marton on the 7th instant has beeu postponed, owing to the indisposition of Col. Gorton. We are sorry to record the death, from consumption, of Mr Charles Cowan, which took place at deceased's residence, Ash-urst-road, yesterday. The funeral takes place to-morrow at 11 o'clock. The shooting season in the Manawatu for cock pheasants, quail, partridges, and hares terminates on the 15th August, not on the 31st July, as was stated in our last issue, which referred to the Wanganui district only. The schooner Croydon Lass is loading at Foxton with timber and sawn shingles from Messrs Roots and Co's mill al Makino. Messrs Corpe and Son are the consignees, and the cargo is destined fjr Christchurch. The Manchester Rifle Corps has been considerably strengthened by the addition of the band, the members of which have been duly sworn in, five as bandsmen, m accordance with the new Government regulations, and the remainder a. volunteers. By a Government Gazette published on July 27th we learn that the Governor has been pleased to appoint that the Board ot Commissioners of the Bull's Town Board, un!er'*the Town District Act. 1881," shall consist of seven Commissioners. If a statement made by Mr Green during his lecture at the Athenaeum last Monday evening be accepted as correct, all anxiety with regard to the increase of the population of New Zealand may be allayed. Mr Green asserted that the statistics showed conclusively that the population of the colony doubled itself iv the natural way every ten years. A splended opportunity is now offerred by Mr Mandle tobacconist to the settlers ol Feilding, to purchase all kinds of tobacco, fancy goods, &c. Mr Mandlo is closing business in Feilding and will sell at a loss all the opened goods sooner than be at the expense of repacking them. As all the articles tire of first class quality, he ought to be able to dispose of them. Mr Shaw's Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment makes it an offence to advertise, publish, or print by newspaper, placard, or circular, any lottery scheme, and provides tor heavy penal ties. Those not exceeding 20s per share, and not promoted for commission or reward, shall not be deemed lotteries. (The Bill has since been thrown out.) Mr Dar^aville is going to move for a Select Committee to enquire into his allegations, that the present Premier and Mr Russell received £10,000 from the Bank of New Zealand for services in connection with the Consolidated Loins Act of 1867, by which provincial securices were raised 50 per cent m value. The candidature of Mr A. McDonald is very popular among a large section of the ratepayers of the Oroua Riding, and the general opinion is that he will head the poll. From his thorough knowledge of the district and his well-known ability, the selection of this gentleman as a Councillor will be a most judicious one. It has been decided to hold a concert in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church, in the Public Hall on Friday the 17th instant. The list of performers who have volunteered their assistance on the occasion is a large one, and includes several distinguished amateurs from other parts of the districts. Mr James Stevens has undertaken the duties of secretary, and tins is a snlfic'ent guarantee that all details will be efficiently carried out.

The Chairmnn of fhe Provisional Directors of tiie Cheese and Butter Factory Company has applied to the Government to permit tne lecturer, Mr Bowron, who is employed ly the Slate to lecture on Cheese and Butler Factories, to visit Feildiug and address a meeting of the settlers interested. It is probable the request will be acceded to, and we hope the results will be favorable. Through some unaccountable mistake, a worthy pair retired to rest without " barrin the door," and in the darkness of ''fhe stilly night" a large Newfoundland dog managed to effect nn entrance to the room where the husband and wife were a sice]).
