The latest accounts to hand from Cassauiciolo show conclusively that nearly two thousand persons were killed by the recent earthquake, and that a thousand have received injuries of a more or less serious nature. . Capetown, July 30. Intelligence has been received here from Port Klizabeth that the Phoenix Park informer, James Carey, was shot dead yesterday on board the sreamer Melrose, by a man named O'Donnell, who had been a fellow passenger with him from London. The attack was a very sudden one, and Carey died instantly of the wound received. Peeth (Western Australia), July 30. The steamer Pathan has arrived here from England, and it is stated that among the passengers are the Phoenix Park informers, Cavnnagh, Smith, Kelly, and Murphy, travelling under "assumed names. The news, however, is uot yet confirmed.
