The following new Bills were introduced and read a first time :— Native - Lands Act Amendment (Grey), Kawhia i Township Sale BillMajor Atkinson moved, That the House agree with tKe report of the committee on Pacific annexation. Mr Montgomery disagreed with the report.' He did not think it at all desirrble, either in our own or the Native interests, k to annex the New Hebrides. It. would be a bad bargain. He obj ected to a blind guarantee of expense which, might amount to millions. We had had enough to do , to manage our own affairs. Mr Shephard supported the report, and spoke at length as to the advantages which would result to us from annexation, and the danger of the islands falling into foreign possession. Mr Macandrew heartily approved of annexation, but only if we were not asked .to pay for it. We had no funds to spare > for such a purpose. Sir George Grey said that the colonies for the first time had awoke to national ■ life and joint action, and they should not damp the movement, but they should not pledge themselves to any pecuniary -liability. , Mr Hutchison opposed the motion.
