A settler at Manawatu intends, for thejpnrpose of rapidly clearing away these stumps, applying a process at once simple and effective. This process con. sifts in simply boring a hole deep in the centre- of *' the stump, placing therein a quarter of a ( pound of salt-petre, filling o iSu-jy-with'water and plugging'the hole up. In the course of twelve months the ptug may be taken out and the hole filled up with keresene, and fire applied.
