« .. Chicago is being called " the wickedest city in the world." Since Jan., 1 881, that i.s, in 2G months, 09 murders were committed in the city ot Chicago besides cases which were cons.dered justifiable homicide. Forseveral years past the: Democrats have been in. power, the saloons have flourished,' the police has become inefficient, and the finances are in almost inextricable confusion, * n independent movement, that resort of all misgoverned municipalities, is to be tried, and 'the attempt made to elect a 'city* government that will place some restrictions upon the liquor traffic, and introduce measures ot economy. Chicago, says: the New York Iri bur. e, is doubtless: to day the worst governed of the large cities in the country, and -the effort to rescue it from those who have disgraced its name has been • begun none too soon;
