A Wicked City.
« .. Chicago is being called " the wickedest city in the world." Since Jan., 1 881, that i.s, in 2G months, 09 murders were committed in the city ot Chicago besides cases which were cons.dered justifiable homicide. Of this number only one murderer suffered the extreme penalty of death. About a fourth were imprisoned, generally tor short terms, another fourth was let loose on society, while seven renamed unruptured, . and seven died of their wounds or committed suicide. It is therefore not surprising that the respectable citizens of Chicago are making on effort to rescue the cty from the ontrol of the disorderly classes. Forseveral years past the: Democrats have been in. power, the saloons have flourished,' the police has become inefficient, and the finances are in almost inextricable confusion, * n independent movement, that resort of all misgoverned municipalities, is to be tried, and 'the attempt made to elect a 'city* government that will place some restrictions upon the liquor traffic, and introduce measures ot economy. Chicago, says: the New York Iri bur. e, is doubtless: to day the worst governed of the large cities in the country, and -the effort to rescue it from those who have disgraced its name has been • begun none too soon;
In .be Graiid Duchy of Baden, where a compulsory education law is vigorously enforced, crime has' been reduced' in • the ' last seven years*st) per cent, and padperism 25 -per cent. , r ■ , -y \
