The severe storms which have recently prevailed in the south of England have done an immense amount of damage to hop-growers, and fears are entertained that the harvest will be a poor one. lhe spread of cholera in Egypt is causing the greatest alarm in South Europe, »nd the Governments of France and Italy lwve put in force the most stringent quarantine regulations. At Tartbage, Iberia, and Port Said trade is completely paralysed At Malta 21 persons have been found to be infected, and have been isolated. The ravages made by the plague are of such an extensive nature that residents in the infected localities are fleeing away in all directions, and a perfect panic prevails. The St. Petersburg Press is urging upon the Russian Government the necessity for the establishment of a naval station in the Pacific. Professor Huxley has been elected President of the Royal Society. It is believed in official circles that consideration of the New Guinea annexation question will very soon be reopened by the Imperial Government. M. Paul de Cassagnac is now urging through the Press, that Bourbon dynasty is preferable to a Republic. Eleven deaths from cholera have already occured at Menzaleh, where the epidemic only broke out yesterday. Bombay, July 7. News has been received here that serious floods have occurred in the Surat and Gujeral districts, causing immense damage to property, and washing away several village 3. Thousands of Ryots are reported to be homeless and in a destitute condition. Received July 10, 0 55 a.m. Rome, July 8. Much consternation is felt at the Italian seaports and throughout country generally at the rapid strides of thecliolera in Egypt, and fears are entertained that the epidemic may be introduced by vessels arriving via Suez canal. The j police at Brindisi have avowed their intention of preventing passengers or mails from Kgypt being landed at that port, and on the arrival of the P. and O. steamer Surat to-day refused to allow the overland mails to be brought ashore. LoirDoir, July 9. Mr Brndlaugh, in a letter to Mr Gladstone, notified the Premier that he will, at an early date, again present himself at the House of Commons to take his seat as the duly elected representative for Northampton. It is stated on enod authority that James Carey has left Ireland. Up to the present time no reward has been given him for having turned informer in the Phoenix Park trials, and he has never been pardoned for complicity in the murder of the late Lord F. Cavendish and Mr Burke.
