Borough Tenders.
Ox reading our reporter's notes of tho pi-oceedings of the Borough Council, held on Thursday night last, we were not a little astonished to find that our tender to supply the loan debentures was declined, There were two tenders of £10 each, one from a Wanganui tradesman, the other from ourselves. As a majority of tho Councillors are local tradesmen, and supposed to be alive to their own interests, we naturally enough concluded that, as local tenderers, we would receive the benefit of any little advantage, when such advantage was not to the detriment of interests of the ratepayers. In thia we were disappointed. On the most frivolous grounds, namely, that as we had not forwarded specimens of debentures and coupons, our tender must be declined. We may inform our readers that the Municipal Act, by a schedule, provides for the exact form in which these documents should be printed, and we had made every necessary preparation and arrangement to fulfil the conditions of the contract. We presume after this specimen of collective wisdom that shonld the Council require tenders for a bridge or a drain they would like a specimen of either or both sent in for their approval before they accepted any tender. Jt is, in our opinion, a decided mistake to spend the ratepayers money out of the Borough, under any circumstances, but when a thing can be bought as cheap in the Borough as it can be outside of it, and the outside tradesmen gets the benefit, it is sheer folly.
