THE INQUEST.
Father's statement : Mary Stephenson is my daughter ; she is 33 years of age ; was married by Dr Stuart to Timothy Stephenson ten years ago; there were ihree children by the marriage, one of w orn is dead ; Stephenson went to Tauranga four ye;irs ago to buy land, and he said if he came back broke he would cut all our throats. He subsequently returned and kept troubling his wife for money ; she gave him upwards of £30 to keop him quiet. He visited our house on Thurday and wishea to have a conversation with his wife, who said she would have nothing to do with him. He went away and I have not' seen him since that time. Stephenson never previously showed any disposition to act in this terrible direction. When my daughter left home on the day of tiie tragedy she was in ber usual spirits, and she had nothing else but her husband's conduct to trouble her. The occurrence took place about 8o yards from the residence of the late Mrs Stephenson.
