Feilding Borough Council.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of Council was held in the OouaeiJ Chamber on Thursday eveai a g. Present His j worship the Mayor, aad Councillors j Lewers, Sherwill, Worsfold, Kiggin, Fowles, and Thompson. The minutes of tiie previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. Cr Goodbehere wrote an apology for his absence on account of indisposition. Resolved on the motion of Cr Sherwill seconded by Cr Higgin that leave of absence be granted to Cr Goodbehere nntil snch time as his health admits of his attending to his duties as Councillor. Resolved on the motion of Cr Lewers seconded by Cr Higgin that the report of the Finance Committee be adopted. The matter of the petitions from 'the .burgesses on « ihe.. railway line and Port etreet was then discussed. * Cr Lewers said it would be necessary to adopt some line of action, ia the matter and euggeated thai; the Engineer ia company with the Public Works Committee should -make an inspection as to what we» the most urgent works to be done. This, he thought, would be the most satisfactory te all parties. Cr SberwiU endorsed the remarks of Cr Lewers. Or Higgia spoke to the same effect. It was then proposed by Cr Lewers, seconded by Cr Higgin, That when this Conned determines upon the amount which they will spend out of the loan the first year, that the Engineer and Public Weeks. Committee go round and report to the Council the works they consider most urgent. The Mayor thought the proposition might be voided so as to constitute a more direct reply to the petitioners. He greatly sympathised with the prayer of the petitioners and thought that one road in partieuiar was very urgent. After further discussion it was resolved on the motion of Cr Fowles, seconded by Gr Worsfold, That the petition of the j burgesses residing along the Railway ' Line and Port street be received, and tkat tke petitioners be informed that their request will receive every consideration at the hands of the Council. The former proposition was then put and also carried. Besohred, on the motion of Cr Higgin, seeondoa by Gr Sherwill, That the action of ike Public Works Committee in giving instructions for fresh plans and specifications for protection to the Kiwitea stream be ratified and that the tenders invited be opened ; also, that their conduct in accepting tenders for protection to the Makino Stream in Manchester street be endorsed. The- -following tenders were received for Kiwitea Stream: — J. Aitken, £55 13s 6d; Younger and Laing, £78 9s; Fearon and Norman, £82. The tender of Mr Aitken was accepted. The letter from Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill, read, at the previous meeting, making certain offers with reference to the forming and metalling that part of Warwick street leading from Kimbolton .road to Fergusson street, was again read and discussed. , A notice of motion given by Cr Loudon Was brought forward by Cr Lewers, who spoke of the great urgency of the work proposed, and moved that the offer be accepted. :..Cr. The resolution was amended to read as follows, and -was theu carried : — That the work required by Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill be done aa soon as the engineer thinks the weather suitable, and in accordance with their offer contained in their letter provided that the work is kept in a proper state of repair to the end of October, 1883. Tenders as follows for debentures were then opened. Kirlon and Curtis, £10 ; A. D. Willis, £10; H. I. Jones, £15; R. Burrett, £25; J. Hughes, £15 10s. Resolved, That the tender of Mr Willis for debentures and coupon forms, as per sample for Borough of Marton, be accepted. The Council then adjourned till Thursday. 19th inst. ''
