The Chairman made a long speech in support of his proposition. The Council then went into committee on the question. Crs Sanson, Hadfield, and MoLennan supported the resolution. Cr Fry objected to the matter being brought on without notice, and said the proposal had taken them unawares;' Cr Linton agreed with these remarks. Cr Mcßeth saw no harm in the proposition, but thought thd ratepayers would object to it. The matter was then discussed in a conversational manner, and the question was ultimately put to the Council with the following result :— Ayes— Crs : Gray, Hadfield, Sanson, McLennan and Book, strow. Noes— Crs Bruce, Mcßeth, Linton and Fry. The resolution was then reported to the Council and passed. After the accounts had been passed, the Council adjourned at 10 p.m. *
