Plain Speaking

Archdeacon Hales preached to a large congregation at St Dav;d's Hobart, lately, in aid of the diocesan church fund, on the text " They Kingdom Come." At the close of the sprmon the Archdeacon detailed the effort that has been made for supplying ouflyinj districts with clergyman and referred to what has -been done towards the object in the southern portion ofthe archdeaconry in no flattering terms. "In Hobart, the capital of this beautiful island, " he remarked, "you have the seat of Government, a large number of Government officers, the wealtu of the country flows into the city : you have the Governor and Government House yonder, with all its beautiful surroundings; you h'tve the bishop and the dean, and psilaces to worship in like this cathedral ; and what have you given towards the fund t A paltry' £200 ; *not more than is subscribed by one ot our northern parishes ! When I look at that red curtaiu (pointing to the tapestry over the reredos), and remember what you have done, I think it blushes for you. Why, there are many in the congregation who could well afford to write a cheque for this amount and pace it on the altar there as their single offering !" When the veLerable gentleman had uttered these words there was an uneasy movement in many ol the seats, and a tugging at wristbands, which spoke of the working of conscience.
