Football Match. HALCOMBE V. FEILDING.

This, the first match of the season, was played on the Feilding Oval on Saturday afternoon, at three o'clock, and those two most desirable things, delightful weather and a splendid ground, favored the contending parties. The match wa» a rather closely contested one, and brought out the good football qualities of some of the players in particular* It was evident that each side had determined not to be beaten, yet, on the whole, the game was very fairly played. Among those who showed very good form were Messrs Smith, Blythe, Sanderson, and Jones, among the Halcombe men, and for Feilding, Messrs Thompson, Dawson, Boe and Halcombe. Thompson figured well at several long shots, and was warmly applauded. The match was played in four'*^ spells of 20 minutes eacb, Thompson' kicking off for Feilding, when the ball was soon brought very close to the Halcombe goal, but after a tough battle was brought by the visitors to the centre of the field. In the second spell some good playing was exhibited by the Feildingites, which, however, owing to the evidently increased determination of their opponents, failed in securing them a score. In the third spell there was some very close fighting, in which Halcombe made desperate attempts to score, Smith nearly succeeding in getting into goal, but Feilding responded se energetically that they had no chance. The last spell was somewhat in favor of Haleon.be, who kept the ball very close to the Feilding goal most of the time, but the teams were too evenly matched to allow of scoring on either side, and tho game was drawn slightly in favor of Feilding. The game was an interesting and pleasant one, and concluded with three hearty cheers for each team from the other. The names of the players of the respective teams have already appeared in onr columns. We would suggest to players that it is not absolutely necessary for them to exert their lungs by yelling and shouting in order to cany out a came properly, but it is occasionally necessary for the voices of the umpires to be heard. This is simply impossible as tbe game is now played when so mnch noise is made by the players. At Home a short time ago a match was played in almost perfect silence, and it was noted how mnch better the players were able to assist eacb other and how seldom the umpires' services were called for. We think this would be a good example to follow next Saturday, when polishing off the Palmerston men.
