Mr Sperry, the Property Tax Com- ' misssioner, has helped the Ormond Road Board out of a fix by sending a duplicate copy of the rate roll of that district sealed with the ballot papers. The Poverty Bay settlers are taking active steps to gain information re the formation of a company to preserve meat for export, establishing a soap and candle works, and a bone-crushing mill. This afternoon a girl two years old, a daughter of a laborer named Hnrsley, living at Walthamj Was drowne.din; a tub of water which she fell into in the absence of her mother. Last night a six-roomed house in Sydenham owned and occupied by James Newman was burnt down, and only part of the furniture was saved. Insurance on the house, £300 in the ( oloniai office; furniture, £100 in the Victorian office. Newman had £121 in bank notes in the house, and he estimates his loss at £250 above the insurance. The cause of the fire is unknown. The family were out at the time. WsLLiNaTON, This Day. Abont 350 guosts were present at the ball given last night by the Wellington Club to His Excellency the Governor. Lady Jervois was to unwell to attend. Major Atkinson returned to Wellington from Nelson this morning. The Government: telegraphed to the Agent- General the drowning "of Firth the English tourist, at Ohinemutu, and a reply has been received asking for details of the sad occurrence. These hare been embodied in a cable message and transmitted. The Wellington Woolen Manufacturing Company was registered this morning. The Governor inspected the Government printing office while the building was lit with the electric .light.- He expressed satisfaction at the result obtained by the use of electricity as an illuminator. His remarks on the building itself, however, were not complimentary as it is inconvenient and unsuitable for the purpose for which it is used.
