A Rejoinder.
TO THE EDITOB OF THB STAB.
Sir,— ln your last issue Mr Macarthur concluded a long letter by hoping the Council will soon "get over the irritability wliich no doubt affects local bodies when suddenly awakened," and congratulating himself on having been the means of " stirring them up." The members of the Council did not so much object to the subject matter of 'Mr Macarthur's letter, but the peculiar tone in which it was worded caused a discussion on its merits or demerits. What I wished to convey to the Council in my remarks, when speaking of the Bunny-thorpe-Oroua Road, was that the Borough Council were not to blame in the matter, they having no official knowledge ; that the settlers were moving, nor were they invited by them to co-operate. ;*I did not wish to blame Mr Macarthur in his capacity of Chairman to the Manchester Highway Board, but stated tbat if he knew that the settlers were moving it would havo been easy for him to draw the attention of myself, or any other member of the Council — without'waiting until the last moment to accuse us of dilatoriness. I am glad that Mr Macarthur has bad an opportunity of telling us what he has done for Feilding. At. tbe same time I beg to remind him that be was Chairman of the Manawatu County Council and the Manchester Highway Board, and that no one had better opportunities of exercising hia abilities towards doing good to tho district than himself. — I am, &c,
F. Y. Lethbbidgb.
