Two members of the Bicycle Club while racing round the Oval on Saturday night were violently thrown to the ground by a young man deliberatly standing in the middle of the track. A requisition is being signed requesting Mr Donald Reid, solicitor, to allow himself to be nominated for the Bruce seat Mr Stout has positively decided not to stand. Christchurch, May 16. Lighting of the Lytteltoa harbour by electricity on Saturday night was a complete success. The Salvation Army meeting to-night was crowded, but passed off quietly probably owing to the fact that several of the police were present. The Blue Ribbon Mission closed tonight. Eight hundred and nine persons have taken the pledge since the commencement. Westport, This Day. The Omapere was proceeding to sea in tow of the Mahmapua at 10 last night, when the former took the ground' on the bar. The latter also bumped, and the tow rope had to be cut. The Omapere stuck hard and fast, and was gradually drifting into the surf to the north of the channel. An attempt will be made to get her off at flood-tide to-day. The Mahinapua recrossed the bar and returned to Port and will assist the Omapere. The Grafton went out safely immediately after the accident. Wellington, This Day. Government telegrams from Parihala state that there was no attemp on the part of the natives to hold a meeting on the 17th. New Plymouth, This Day. The body of Matthew Clough, who was drowned a week ago whi'st crossing the Manganui River, was recovered yesterday morning after much difficulty, in twenty-five feet of water, the bottom of the river being quick-sand.
