Temperance Meeting at Halcombe.
< • ■ A meeting was held in the Primitive Methodist Church, Halcombe, on Wednesday evening last, for the purpose of taking active steps* for the formation of a Temperance Society. After the meeting had been opened by singing and prayer, by the Rev J. Clover, Mrß. Linton, senr., was voted to the chair. The form of pledge to be adopted by the society having been agreed upon, it was decided that the name of the society should be " The Halcombe Blue Ribbon Temperance Society." The appointment of officers and committeemen resulted as follows : — President, Mr R. Linton, senr.; Vice-President, W. J. Botting; Secretary, H. A. Dickenson ; Treasurer E. Morris. Committee : Messrs Gill, Crawford, Gower, Lightbum, Poad, Bell, and Tyler. It was resolved that an entrance fee and quarterly fee of Is per member should be charged to supply necessary funds for working the society. The meetings are to be held every alternate Tuesday, and for the present the place of meeting is to be the Primitive Methodist Church. The matter of having members cards was deferred for further consideration. The blue ribbon is to be worn as a visible token of membership. In compliance with the meeting's request the Rev J. Clover promised to give a temperance, address on Wednesday next, the 23rd inst. Great unanimity and heartiness pervaded the meeting, and, considering that most present gave in their names for membership, and that already crowded Band of Hope -meetings are held fortnightly, it may bo fairly inferred that the tempera»ce spirit is becoming increasingly active among the people in Halcombe.
