A Bishop in Trouble.

The Napier Telegraph says the Bishop of Dunedin was reported by a local paper to have said during the late sittings of the General Synod at Napier, that "his quarterly income was £90, and out of that, last quarter, £75 was deduced for law charges and other expenses." An addendum was also added to this statement to the effect that, having no " See-house" provided, the Bishop had to pay £200 a year for rent. From a recent issue of the Otago Daily Times we notice that the Diocesan Treasurer of Dunedin emphatically denies the truth of the remarks imputed to Bishop Neville hy the Herald! lie says "the income paid over to his Lordship for the past four years has been ha- follows :— IB7B-9, £570 18s Id ; 1879-80, £580 19 lid; 1880-81, £480 6s 41 ; 1881-2, £482 4s 8d j and the total amount of law costs in four years was £14 19s 9d. The reduction in the income during the past two years has arisen from a lower prevailing rate of interest on investments, and extensive repairs to house property held by the Trust." Of course the explanation of the matter may be that Bishop Neville was mis-reported by the Herald, buc in that case it would seem strange that the rev gentleman never took any steps to correct the false impression that got abroad belore he left Napier. On the other hand it may prove that the report was quite correct, and that the mistake arose simply through the Bishop's want; of aptitude for what our American cousins would term " figuring." Meantime the problem remains unsolved.
