The Public Library.
* . Now that a library rate has been struck, and is payable at the Borough Council offices, we think it is time lhat a step further be taken and the library supplied with some standard works in order to make it attractive, and promote the chief end for which the library is formed, by making it useful to the general public, and also provide mental pabulum for those ratepayers whose tastes are already formed, but who are. at present unable to gratify them from want of the necessary books. Our library committee cannot do better than follow the example of the- Clifton Public Library. They made arrangements of a most satisfactory nature with Messrs J. J. Moose and Co.. of Sydney, under which a number of the best standard works and recent publications were obtained at a cost of fifteen per cent, under the English retail rates, lhe binding and let-ter-press are of the best description, and make the volumes admirably suited for circulation. After all necessary expenses are deducted from the total rate (which will be about £40), there will be left available for the purchase of books, say £20. We would suggest to the library committee that a selection of books be made and sont for, without further unnecessary delay, up to this amount.
