Local & General News.

♦ A notice of motion has been given to suspend the Counties Act in Wanganui County, and work through the Road Boards. The stationmaster's house at Foxton is to be forthwith considerably enlarged and thoroughly renoyated for the convenience and comfort of Mr Brebner and his family. On Tuesday last, a man named Fred. Tuckey, working at the Messrs Barlholomew's mill, had his left leg severely bruised by a log rolling on to it. Mr James Wright Stewart, C.E., of Wellington, has been appointed Engineer for the Southern division of the County, and from what we hear of this gentleman's ability and experience, the Council will have no cause to regret his appointment. Mr Adolphus Oppenheimer, of Auckland, has courteously forwarded us a form of application for space in the Calcutta International Exhibition, 1883, to be opened at Calcutta on the 4th of December, 1883. Mrs Warne, late hostess of " The Monastery," Feilding, has entered upon the business of the boarding house at Ashurst, formerley occupied by Mr Lacy and recently known as Russell's, but which has for some time been closed. The Taranaki News says : An influential commitee is engaged in the laudable task of arranging for a snitable testimonial to Mr C W. Huisthouse, to commemorate his journey through the king conntry. A book of 600 pages, having for its sensational title " Polygamy, or the mysteries and crimes of Mormonism" has been compiled and published by some Government authorities at Utah. It is dedicated "to the ladies of America," and is being circulated in this colony. It is being pushed in Wanganui, and is well spoken of by those who have seen it. The cost to the colony of the Maori jury panel, summoned to the Supreme Court, at Wanganui, was £58 Bs, and that of the two European common jury panels, £36 each. The cost of the panel of matrons summoned in the ease of the condemned Phonbe Veitch was nil, as the law makes no provision for the payment of ladies, either as "common" or " special" j ury women. A slight typographical error appeared in our local on Saturday referring to the number of votes required to carry the Borough loan. Instead of the number of votes being required to be more than one half of the number of " voters," it should have read " more than one half the number of burgesses." In other words, the votes recorded on the day of polling mnst exceed half the nnmber of names on the burgess roll. We congratulate Mr Bray on his appointment as Engineer and Superintendent of Works for the northern division of the Manawatu County, and need only add that this is sufficient guarantee that the various extensive works about to be done in the ridings concerned will be carried out in a manner that will give that satisfaction which has hitherto followed the numerous works in the district effected under Mr Bray's supervis'on. At the County Council meeting on Tuesday, a letter was received in which the writer, referring to some matter to which his attention had bee a called by the Council, intimated that the responsibility did not rest with him, but with his brother, who was " somewhere in China," and the d- airman humorously suggested that some councillor move that a letter be addressed to " China," and a blind confidence reposed in chance to guide the epistle to its proper destination In Tuesday's issue we stated that we had learned that Messrs Warne & Beard had resigned the lesseeship of the sawmill at Ashurst. belonging to theE. and C. A. Corporation, and that the latter had appointed as manager Mr Edward Potts, formerly of the Wairarapa. We find we were wrongly informed in the following particulars : — Messrs Warne and Beard have not resigned the actual lease of the mill as they are the actual proprietors ; the mill is not (he property of the E. and C. A. Corporation, and that the said E. and C. A. Corporation has not appointed Mr Potts as manager. This gentleman was appointed by Messrs Warne and Beard, as they found from their large and increasing business it was absolutely necessary to have a first-class practical man to take charge of the mill, as the attention of the two members of the firm is fully occupied outside. In apologising for the errors as above, in justice to ourselves we must state that our authority ' appeared at the time undoubted.

I Lust Sn M mill the Rev. !i M. Murray I announced that on Sunday evening next he would deliver a l<>ctnre on the sufferings of (lie Scottish Covenanters. As the i previous lecture was so well appreciated, ! a large number of people will doubtless assemble to hear it. The English mail, via San Francisco, was delivered in Wanganui last night. j The Feilding portion will arrive this even- | ing. Something will have to be done to save the unnecessary delay caused by mails for the Manawatu having to be forwarded via Wellington. On Wednesday last, at Cheltenham, A young lad named Currin, aged about 14 years, was taking some grass over a feuce (o feed a horse, when he fell and dislocaied his left elbow joint. Dr Johnston was called in and promptly reduced the dislocation. To-day's Chronicle says: We learn that arrangements are in progrjss for the conversion of York and Cornfoot's establishment in a joint-stock company, the bulk of the shares to be held by the Manawatu and Rangitikei saw millers, the present members of the firm, and the principal local contractors. Noah's Ark has been discovered in one of the gens of Mt. Ararat. The timbers are in a good state of preservation, being painted or stained on the outside with a dark brown pigment and constructed of great strength. An enterprising Yankee has opened negotiations in the hope of purchasing the Ark from the Pasha of the district in order to have it removed to the United States for exhibition. One of the finest pigs that has ever been seen in this district, is now in the possession of Mr Belfit, of Warwick«st. The animal measures six feet six inches i in length, and about three feet in height, J and is judged to be nearly 3cwt., while it is apparently capable of being fed up to 2cwt. more, as it is not by any means fully fat. This huge porkie was bred we believe by Mr Towler. The quarterly election of officers of the Feilding Lodge, 1.0. G.T., No. 106, was held on Saturday evening last. The following officers were elected : — W.C.T.. Bro Bray, (right and left hand supporters, Sisters Ixavena) ; V T., Bro Collins ; W.S., Bro Hammond ; F.S., Bro Worsfold ; W.T., Sister Towler ; W.C., Bro Towler; W.M., Bro Daw; 1.G., Bro Weatherley; O.G-, Bro Price; P.C.T.. Bro Ranger. The officers will be installed on Saturday evening. With reference to the price usually paid for milk for dairy factory purposes, tiz., 4d per quart, and which is the price proposed to be paid by the Feilding Cheese and Butter Factory Company, we have been assured by a practical judge that this amount is equal I o selling butter all the year round at Is per pound, to say nothing of the time and trouble saved in the making, which would be effected by sending the milk to the factory, whereas the price realized for butter the year through scarcely averages 7d per pound. At an opening meeting for the season of rhe Nelson Debating Society the other evening, there were present, besides the members, an avidience of nearly 100, consisting chiefly of ladies, attracted no doubt by the subject of discussion, which was : — " That women ought not to be prevented, by difficulty of education, by restrictive laws, or by social prejudices, from oarning an inde pendant living in any career now open to men." After an animated debate the question was put to the members, when the voting being found to be even, the chairman, the Rev. J. C. Andrew, gave his casting vote with the ayes. "Advertising," said the Right Hon W. E. Gladstone speaking apropos of this subject, " is undoubtedly very affective. Its power is enormous, it appears, if we consult those who hare made successful use of this extraordinary instrument, that it depends wholly on producing an impression on the public mind by iteration or by the constant repetition of the same thing. This shows a very singular state of the public mind ; it shows there is relative to those matters a certain amount of dullness, a great eagerness to compete for attention and no one gets it except by giving, as it were, so many strokes of the hammer to compel people to notice what is going on." Among the 18 written applications for the post of County Engineer, received by the Council on Tuesday, were some from various parts of the colony. Most of the candidates had superintended works in different parts of the globe. Even London Bridge was named by one, and some j Government works in Jamacia by another, while several enclosed apparently high testimonials referring to the marks left behind them in the Land of the Thistle. Two candidates especially were very considerate, one saying he would do the work for much less than the Council was offering, and the other that he would prefer that division of the County which involved the most work.
